Location

The site for the Gateway gas storage facility is located approximately 25 km (15 miles) offshore, south west of Barrow-in-Furness, within the 12 mile territorial limit, in the East Irish Sea.

The British Geological Survey has confirmed that this location has the best characteristics to be found in Britain to support the development of offshore salt cavern gas storage facilities.

Extensive geological and technical surveys have been undertaken to confirm the ideal nature of the salt for cavern construction at this location, at depths between 750m and 1025m beneath the seabed.

The facility will be connected via a new pipeline routed from the storage area to the shore, across Walney Island and Piel Channel, to a site adjacent to the existing North and South Morecambe gas terminals.

The area hosts a number of offshore oil and gas operations, and is ideally situated to provide operational infrastructure, facilities and personnel. Furthermore, locating the project in Barrow will underpin the long term viability of the current gas industry in the region.

The Gateway gas storage facility offers the following potential future strategic benefits:
  • Development of additional gas storage capacity, in response to future market demand.
  • Connection to conventional gas reservoirs in close proximity to the Gateway site which could facilitate a wide range of storage services at the Barrow terminal.
  • Integration with an offshore LNG terminal.
